Bonsai is actually two words, "Bon", and "Sai". The word "Bon" means "tray" and "Sai", "growing" or "planting". Therefore, the two words put together give you the translation of "tray growing" or "tray planting". When you talk about bonsai people usually think about small bonsai trees, sometimes hundreds of years old.
Bonsai is more than just planting a small tree in a pot. It is the sculpting, pruning and miniaturizing of nature. For instance, if you are looking to represent a full grown japanese juniper tree you will have to carefully nurture and sculp your little cutting until it has the same shape as its larger counterpart. Then it is a matter of encouraging the trunk and branches to thicken in order to look more like a mature tree.
And that is not even thinking about its surroundings. Do you want the roots exposed, perhaps growing over a rock, do you want a little landscape in your bonsai pot. The possibilities are endless, which is why no two bonsai are alike.
